If you want to be a work of art ...

______

Paul Janowska

Take it off panties for art? - so begins the text in the "high heels" dedicated to the project "Backstage" Charles Radziszewski. I must admit that the idea intrigued me so much that I decided to see for yourself what it looks like this exhibition. The Contemporary Art Gallery in Krakow were presented videos and photo exhibition, whose theme is the male body. On the gallery page you can read that the work concentrated on working behind the scenes of the artist and his relationship with the models. Watching this exhibition should therefore focus on issues such as media manipulation, or a different perspective on male and act on the process of dressing the body in art.

To be honest, I had a completely different experience and associations. Watching movies presented wondering where is the border of art. The issue of showing the work is quite broad, often came to my mind that the exhibition is devoted to the problems of even human behavior. While watching the movie "Painters" in 2007 I felt uncomfortable, and yet I was very curious. Video shows workers on the site. I do not know how this movie was filmed, but the viewer has an intolerable feeling of voyeurism. Recognition of fuzzy leaves of trees, a lack of focus, restless camera movement, framing, or the way we have to draw attention to something important, but it does not show too much. The film could be felt everywhere, eroticism, which, however, did not speak to me, because sweaty, dirty boys of the body from the construction site are not for me in any way pleasant and does not arouse feelings of fascination. Moreover, something else struck me. With all due respect for the men filmed, but I had a feeling of watching animals in their natural habitat. The film consisted of similar sequences, which were also displayed in the new men. Climbed up the scaffolding, jumped like a monkey, we could also see their behavior within the group. Sounds were muffled, from the street came the sounds of: a moving streetcar, jackhammer.

film "Backstage" created specially for the exhibition, was different. Not already be eligible to voyeurism, was the result of working with models. The thing that interested me most, was how young men react to your body and whether they are able to break the taboo. And it turns out that when he treats them accordingly, are able to take off your pants "for of art. " I do not know how many actually did it for art, because - with the exceptions - there seemed to me to be particularly interested in it. Maybe their reasons for a bit more narcissistic, can overcome our fears? This confrontation is important from the standpoint of the model, who is surprised by the question: Take it off shirt, pants? etc. were yet aware that they are at the audition, that are recorded and that may appear in the gallery as "a work of art." This is oblige. Aware of the observation and the lack of support in their natural environment - Any resistance would have to undress. But why are so easy for them to picture T-shirts, nay, even trousers, and underwear that's more a shame? Or maybe models afraid that suddenly become sexual objects? And more importantly, not only for women ...

If it's art is strongly committed to the psycho-sociological discourse because, without the social context becomes less pronounced and clear to read. In any case stirs emotions at the beginning of the most positive and enthusiastic, but in retrospect, and "digest", I'm not sure - perhaps more positive, although not quite so enthusiastic. Because if arouses emotions in us, nay, engages us in some way intellectually (because we have to answer the question: what's going on, nothing is so obvious), in this sense fulfills "the requirements" of art. For this raises an important topic of the male body in multiple cultures around us.
